In verse 7 Peter gives an illustration of a fiery trial. He reminds his readers what happens to gold. This is a very precious and valuable metal. Yet to obtain the purest form of gold, it has to be refined to a high standard. Fire has to melt it so that it can be reformed. This fiery trial is necessary, otherwise many impurities will remain within the lump of precious metal. It is when the gold is put into the intense heat of the furnace that every trace of impurity is burnt up. If pure gold is wanted,
