In verse 7 Peter gives an illustration of a fiery trial. He reminds his readers what happens to gold. This is a very precious and valuable metal. Yet to obtain the purest form of gold, it has to be refined to a high standard. Fire has to melt it so that it can be reformed. This fiery trial is necessary, otherwise many impurities will remain within the lump of precious metal.
